2010 Delheim Chenin Blanc, South Africa

When we visited South Africa a few years ago, we had the pleasure to visit (among others) the Delheim estate in Stellenbosch. We really enjoyed the way they did their wine tastings. You were handed a list of wines and you crossed the ones you wanted to taste. Further you could decide between a cheese platter, a cold cuts platter or a platter with both :). Platter was a wooden tray - quite rustique, all of it. Basically, you were left to yourself, more like at a restaurant, not so much of a guided wine tasting. But of course, you could ask questions and were given answers. And what can I say? The more wines we tasted, the better the food became! And vice versa. We had our children with us, who were not drinking any wine, and who at all other places just wanted to get back to the pool. But here, at Delheim, even they enjoyed the atmosphere, for some reason. Good for us - gave us the extra glass to try.

Fun, to see this wine at for € 6,90. And to receive it in a post package is very convenient too. No schlepping home boxes...

And how was the wine? This medium-bodied, dry Chenin Blanc has 13,5 % abv - and that you feel, both in your nose and on your palate (and in your head, if you keep on drinking, I'd assume). It gives it a bit of a oily touch, which we could have done without. The typical very high acidity of CB is found in this bottle, too. As are flavours of pear, melon, pineapple, citrus and grapefruit, even hints of hazelnut.

February Vines

Spring is in the air, temps are up to 15 C this week, in accordance to forecast. Soon, the almond trees will be all covered in pink of all shades.

But even grey February days have some beauty to offer, as this picture that Lars took, shows. Don't you agree? Clean and 'stilrent' as the Swedes call it....

And for those of you who wonder, this is a part of the Ruppertsberger Reiterpfad.

2009 Damana 5, Ribera del Duero, Spain

Time for a Spanish wine post again...
Together with some fun ladies, I recently attended a Spanish wine tasting that was held by Melanie from We had so much fun that I actually forgot my notes at the host's house and never got them back. Oh well... However, I did buy a few wines and this one was one of them.

Damana 5, Tabula Bodegas, € 10,50
92 % Tempranillo, 8 % Cabernet Sauvignon

Cinco meses - referring to the 5 months the wine spent in French and American oak barrels. Dark cherry red color with purple hints. The nose of ripe dark-red berries with spices and hints of vanilla. Very fruity on the palate, again, ripe red and dark berries. Good acidity. The tannins, both from oak and fruit, towards challenging - definitely need food with this wine - and astringent. Medium-bodied. 13,5 % abv.

Ribera del Duero, the DOC with about 20.000 ha, is on high altitude between 700 and 850 meters. Warm days and cold nights, and less problems with deseases provide with good circumstances for wine growing.

Still, I am more of a Rioja girl...

2010 Faubel Riesling Maikammer Kirchenstück

I am a lucky girl. Just by attending certain school events, I get to try some of the best wines the region has to offer! The latest new discovery for me, was the 2010 Riesling (Spätlese) from Weingut Faubel in Maikammer.  Maikammer Kirchenstück is the name of the vineyard. You might already know this winery and their wines, since they belong to the 100 best - in accordance to the German Handelsblatt anyway. See, I do not care about such lists or PP (Parker points, etc). But, because I follow Christian Schiller and his wine blog, where he posted about it, I - of course - took a curious look at the Pfalz wineries mentioned in the list.

Remember, I am more the girl posting about what suits MY own personal palate - and very much not objective in any way. Freedom of blogging! Cheers!

However, this wine is definitely worth a try! Wonderful clear and crisp acidity, paired with ripe citrus and yellow apple, a bit of cilantro and a beautiful, discreet minerality. A proud wine, with elegance and structure. Medium-bodied, and dry, it has quite something to offer to your palate. Price: around 9 €. 12,5 % abv.

Try yourself and let me know how you liked it! Please.
